FERROFOL spansules

UGX 15,000

Description

Ferrofol (Dried ferrous sulphate 150 mg + Equivalent to Iron 47 mg + Folic acid 0.5 mg) 30 capsules

Composition

Each capsule capsule contains:
Dried ferrous sulphate ………………………………………………… 150 mg
Equivalent to Iron ………………………………………………………….. 47 mg
Folic acid ………………………………………………………………………. 0.5 mg

Therapeutic Indications

Prophylaxis of iron and folic acid deficiency during pregnancy and lactation.
Iron-deficiency anemia.

Dosage and Administration

Adults Only:
One FERROFOL Capsule daily.
Iron-deficiency anemia and some pregnant women may need a higher dose of iron because of dietary or other factors.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of FERROFOL.
FERROFOL should not be given to patients receiving repeated blood transfusions or to patients with anemias not produced by iron deficiency unless iron deficiency is also present.

Warnings and Precautions

FERROFOL should never be given for the treatment of undiagnosed megaloblastic anemia, since folic acid may produce a haematopoietic response in patients with a megaloblastic anemia due to vitamin B12 deficiency without preventing aggravation of neurological symptoms, which may lead to serious neurological damage.
FERROFOL should be used with caution in patients with iron-storage or iron-absorption diseases such as haemochromatosis, haemoglobinopathies, or existing gastrointestinal diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal strictures and diverticula.

Drug Interactions

Concurrent use of iron with antacids, calcium supplements, tea, coffee, milk or milk products may decrease iron absorption and so iron supplements should not be taken within one hour before or two hours after ingestion of any of the above.
Concurrent administration of tetracyclines, turpentine with iron salts may impair absorption of both agents, and so if treatment with both drugs is required, a time interval of about 2-3 hours should be allowed between them.
Concomitant administration of penicillamine with iron salts may decrease absorption of penicillamine.
Concomitant administration of folic acid with oral contraceptives, Aminosalicylic may reduce absorption of folic acid.
Concomitant administration of folic acid with antiepileptic drugs such as phenytoin may reduce plasma concentration of these drugs.

Pregnancy and Lactation

FERROFOL can be used safely during pregnancy and lactation.

Undesirable Effects

FERROFOL is generally well–tolerated.
Side effects may include abdominal pain, GI irritation, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, darkening of the stool.

Overdose

It has been stated that more than the equivalent of 20 mg/kg of iron could lead to some symptoms of toxicity and that in a young child the equivalent of about 60 mg/kg of iron should be regarded as extremely dangerous.
Symptoms:
In the first phase, which occurs up to 6 hours after oral ingestion, gastrointestinal toxicity, notably vomiting and diarrhea, predominates.
Other effects may include cardiovascular disorders such as hypotension, metabolic changes including acidosis and hyperglycemia, and CNS depression ranging from lethargy to coma.
Patients with only mild to moderate poisoning do not generally progress past this first phase.
The second phase, which is not always seen, may occur at 6-24 hours after ingestion and is characterized by a temporary remission or clinical stabilization.
In the third phase, 12-48 hours after ingestion, gastrointestinal toxicity recurs together with shock, metabolic acidosis, severe lethargy or coma, hepatic necrosis and jaundice, hypoglycemia, coagulation disorders, oliguria or renal failure, and possible myocardial dysfunction.
The fourth phase may occur several weeks after ingestion and is characterized by gastrointestinal obstruction and possibly late hepatic damage.
Treatment:
Treatment includes gastric lavage followed by administration of 5 g desferrioxamine by IV infusion. Serum iron levels should be monitored and supportive and symptomatic measures should be applied.

Pharmacological Properties

FERROFOL is a haematinic preparation especially formulated for prophylaxis and treatment of iron and folic acid deficiency during pregnancy and lactation.
FERROFOL is formulated as capsule capsules to release most of the iron in the upper small intestine where absorption is greatest and not in the stomach where gastric irritation may occur.
Ferrous sulphate acts as a source of iron for iron-deficiency anemia. Each capsule capsule contains 150 mg of dried ferrous sulphate; four-fifths of the iron is especially formulated for sustained release over a period of several hours.
Folic acid is a member of the vitamin B group; it is reduced in the body to tetrahydrofolate, which is a coenzyme for various metabolic processes including the synthesis of DNA.
Both iron and folic acid are essential for erythropoiesis and maturation of RBCs.

Storage

Store in a dry place at a temperature not exceeding 30°C.

FERROFOL Capsule Capsules:  Box containing 3 strips of 10 capsule capsules each.

Expert nutrition for mother and babyPregnacare prenatal supplement is the most popular and trusted by mums to safeguard the diet of those who are planning for pregnancy or are already pregnant. A scientifically developed formulation of 19 important vitamins and minerals, Pregnacare contains 400µg folic acid and 10µg vitamin D, as advised by the UK Department of Health during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Pregnacare has been carefully developed by experts so that all ingredient levels are within safe levels for pregnancy and are moderate rather than excessive.Recommended level of folic acid & vitamin DThe UK Department of Health recommends women planning a baby should take a supplement containing 400µg of folic acid from the start of trying to conceive until the 12th week of pregnancy. This is the exact amount of folic acid contained in Pregnacare. Supplemental folic acid intake increases maternal folate status†. Low maternal folate status is a risk factor in the development of neural tube defects in the developing foetus.Folic Acid is also beneficial beyond 12 weeks as it contributes to maternal tissue growth during pregnancy.Important: Some pregnancy formulas do not include the exact 10 µg vitamin D, as advised by the UK Department of Health during pregnancy and breast-feeding.More than folic acid alone - with B12 and key mineralsMany studies show the importance of ensuring the correct intake of various vitamins and minerals throughout the entire pregnancy and as part of an aftercare plan. Pregnacare provides a range of nutrients for overall support, all at sensible, carefully balanced levels, including vitamins B2, B6 and B12 which contribute to normal red blood cell formation.Pregnacare avoids high dose iron which is not recommendedUnlike many prenatal iron supplements, Pregnacare has been specifically formulated with an ideal, moderate level of iron. High levels of iron are not recommended unless there is a particular requirement as identified by your healthcare professional. Before conceptionPregnacare is recommended before conception to build up the stores of nutrients such as iron in women who are trying for a baby. Good nutrition is important to help prepare a woman's body for the additional demands placed on it during pregnancy. Certain nutrients, like folic acid, vitamin B12 and zinc are also of particular importance from the very first moment of conception. Zinc contributes to normal fertility and reproduction whilst vitamin B12 contributes to normal red blood cell formation and also has a role in the process of cell division. For all of pregnancyGood nutritional intake is vital throughout pregnancy, not just the first 12 weeks. Pregnacare provides essential nutrients throughout pregnancy including folic acid which plays an important role during the full nine months and contributes to normal blood formation. You can start taking Pregnacare at any point during pregnancy.Specially formulated by expertsPregnacare has been formulated by experts to help safeguard a mother's diet during pregnancy. It provides a comprehensive spectrum of essential nutrients at carefully chosen safe levels, developed on the basis of international research. It has always contained the recommended level of 400µg folic acid**. Pregnacare is proud to work in partnership with the Royal College of Midwives to support the health of mothers and babies by raising awareness of the benefits of good nutrition.†The beneficial effect is obtained with a supplemental folic acid daily intake of 400mcg for at least one month before and up to three months after conception.** Folic acid contributes to maternal tissue growth during pregnancy. Pregnacare has always contained 400mcg folic acid, the level recommended for all women from the start of trying to conceive until the 12th week of pregnancy.

Overview Information
Honey is a substance produced by bees from the nectar of plants. It is commonly used as a sweetener in food. It may also be used as a medicine. Honey is most commonly used for burns, wound healing, swelling (inflammation) and sores inside the mouth (oral mucositis), and cough. It is also used for many other conditions but there is no good scientific evidence to support most of these uses.
How does it work?
Some of the chemicals in honey may kill certain bacteria and fungus. When applied to the skin, honey may serve as a barrier to moisture and keep skin from sticking to dressings. Honey may also provide nutrients and other chemicals that speed wound healing.
